Activity Description
Skeleton Coast Explorer – Shipwrecks, Secrets & Seals
Step into the wild, mysterious world of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast — where the desert meets the Atlantic in a symphony of shipwrecks, silence, and striking scenery. This unforgettable full-day adventure begins at the legendary Ugab Gate and winds deep into one of the most rugged and hauntingly beautiful coastlines on Earth.
Trace the shadows of maritime legends as we search for lost shipwrecks, explore the eerie remains of diamond mines, and uncover the rusted bones of the old oil rig at Toscanini. From the windswept beaches of Torra Bay and Terrace Bay — a photographer’s dream — we pause for a light lunch in the heart of raw wilderness.
On our return journey, prepare to be humbled by the thunderous presence of over 100,000 Cape Fur Seals at Cape Cross, home to the iconic stone cross planted by Portuguese explorer Diego Cão in 1486.
But the magic doesn't end there…
We pass the surreal ‘singing’ musical rocks and the desert’s living artwork — Namibia’s ancient lichen fields. After a quick coffee break in the quirky fishing town of Henties Bay, we journey southward along the Skeleton Coast, stopping for striking photos at the haunting Zeila Shipwreck.
Our final stretch winds through Wlotzkasbaken — a curious old German settlement frozen in time — before arriving back in Swakopmund as the sun dips low over the Atlantic.
This is more than a tour. It’s a story written in sand, salt, and silence. Join us.

Weather
Desert Heat: The Skeleton Coast and surrounding desert areas are known for their extreme temperatures, especially during the day. While mornings and evenings can be cooler, the sun can get intense by midday, with temperatures often rising significantly. Even in winter months, desert heat can be overwhelming, so it's important to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Wind: Coastal winds are common, particularly in the morning and afternoon. The strong winds, combined with the desert conditions, can make the area feel colder than expected, especially near the coastline and shipwreck sites. Variable Conditions: The weather can change unexpectedly, with clear skies turning to fog or overcast conditions near the coast. It’s important to be flexible with the plans as we may encounter some wind, fog, or chilly temperatures on the coast, while the desert areas may be much warmer. Sun Protection: Given the harsh desert environment and UV exposure, we recommend high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing to guard against sunburn. Prepare for the Elements: Be ready for a mix of extreme heat and sudden temperature drops. Dressing in layers is a smart way to stay comfortable throughout the day, no matter where the weather takes us!
What to Wear
Light, Breathable Clothing: Given the heat of the desert, lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are your best friend. Opt for long sleeves and pants to protect your skin from the sun while staying cool. Comfortable Shoes: Comfortable, sturdy footwear is essential, especially since you’ll be walking on uneven terrain, sand, and rocky paths. Closed shoes are best for protection, but something lightweight and breathable will keep your feet comfortable throughout the day. Layers for Flexibility: The Skeleton Coast can be surprisingly cool, especially in the mornings and evenings. Bring along a light jacket or sweater for warmth in case temperatures drop. Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is a must to shield your face from the strong desert sun. It also helps keep you cool and prevents sunburn. Sunglasses: Sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from the intense sunlight and desert glare, particularly as we explore the coastline and shipwrecks. Sun Protection: A scarf or bandana can be handy to protect your neck and face from the sun and wind. It’s a great way to stay cool while keeping the sun at bay. Comfortable Backpack: A small, comfortable backpack to carry your personal items, extra water, snacks, and any other essentials you might need throughout the day.
Things to Bring
Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is essential, especially in the harsh desert heat. We recommend bringing plenty of water to keep refreshed throughout the day. Extra Snacks: While a light lunch is provided, it's always a good idea to bring extra snacks to keep your energy up, especially if you prefer specific dietary options or just need a little extra boost during the journey. Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the intense desert sun with a high-SPF sunscreen. Reapply throughout the day, particularly during the hottest hours. Hat & Sunglasses: A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are highly recommended to protect your face and eyes from the sun’s glare. Comfortable Footwear: Expect some walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. Make sure they’re sturdy enough for uneven ground and sand. Light Layers: Prepare for changing temperatures with layers that you can add or remove as needed. While the desert can be hot, coastal winds can make the air chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings. Camera: The Skeleton Coast is full of stunning landscapes, shipwrecks, and wildlife—don’t forget your camera or phone to capture the memories. Personal Medications: If you need any personal medications, don’t forget to bring them along. Good Humor & Adventurous Spirit: The journey through the Skeleton Coast is full of surprises, and it’s always more fun with a positive attitude and a good sense of humor. Get ready to embrace the adventure!
